Fly Girls PROGRAM Q&A
What is the Fly Girls Program?
The Fly Girls program is the legacy of the pioneering Women’s Olympic Ski Jumping Team. It is a bridge between our terrific national club level programs and the National Team. Fly Girls is the stepping stone and spring board for young women across the country who want to pursue even further their love of ski jumping.
How does Fly Girls fit in with the U.S. National Team program?
Fly Girls was designed as a feeder program to recruit, identify, and foster young talent into the pipeline of the overall National Team program.
The top U.S. female jumpers are named each fall to the National Team. National Team selection criteria is primarily performance-based and is designated as follows: A Team (World Cup); B Team (WC); C Team (World Cup); C Team (COC); and Development Team (national and COC).
What are the goals of the Athlete Development Program?
1. Help recruit and retain girls into ski jumping clubs from five key regions across the nation: Eastern (NY, VT, CT, NH, ME); Central (IL, MI, MN, WI); Rocky Mountain (CO); Intermountain (UT); and Alaska.
2. Provide high-level training guides and tools for young athletes and coaches to benefit and enhance the development of female ski jumpers at all levels and in any region across the U.S.
3. Provide an avenue for collaboration and exchange of ideas and curriculum with club coaches to create a cohesive and streamlined national training philosophy.
4. Identify female ski jumpers, ages 13-16, who will take part in the annual 2-5 week-long Fly Girls Development Camp, hosted at Utah Olympic Park. Top-performing jumpers may be nominated to the Women's Ski Jumping Development Team.
5. Facilitate and encourage young ski jumpers to be well-rounded individuals off the hill by providing nutrition best practices, leadership training, media training, and how to fund-raise their careers and then pay it forward.
5. Provide mentoring program between National Team members and Fly Girls development athletes.
Who created the Fly Girls logo?
The Fly Girls logo was created by renowned designer Lindon Leader of Leader Creative , who also designed the WSJ-USA logo which debuted in 2012. Leader's portfolio includes the famous FedEx and Hawaiian Airlines logos and branding. Leader and his wife, Mary, a former WSJ-USA board member, have been instrumental in their support of the National Team and we're honored they are involved with the foundation. Thank you Lindon and Mary!
