Hendrickson 8th on Saturday, Englund 7th on Sunday at World Cup in Hinzenbach, Austria
/Park City, UT—Sarah Hendrickson, 20, of the U.S. Visa Women’s Ski Jumping Team placed 8th in the eighth World Cup competition of the 2014/2015 season in Hinzenbach, Austria on January 31, 2015. In a highly competitive field, Hendrickson soared 88.5 and 83.5 meters in her two jumps, scoring 233.6 points. Daniela Iraschko-Stolz of Austria took first place amidst a home-country crowd, jumping 93.0 and 91.5 meters in her two jumps and scoring 251.4 points.
On Saturday, Hendrickson’s team-mate, Nita Englund, 22, showed her consistent competitiveness at the World Cup level, finishing 15th with two jumps of 86.5 meters. Abby Hughes, 25, recently back from a knee injury, placed a respectable 19th, with jumps of 83.0 and 87.0 meters.
Englund came back in full force on Sunday, February 1, 2015, taking 7th place by soaring 89.0 and 86.0 meters and scoring 230.1 points. Hendrickson placed 15th with jumps of 86.0 and 84.0 meters and 219.2 points. Carina Vogt of Germany won the competition with 92.0 and 90.0 meter jumps, scoring 245.2 points.
“This was a much better weekend for me,” said Sarah Hendrickson. “Not only for results, but also for confidence. I have had some knee pain this weekend, but am happy with the outcome. It was a fair, sunny, and fun competition.”
“I would say that mentally I was not right on Saturday and it showed in the results,” commented Nita Englund. “Today was better, but I have a lot of work to do on my landings and I was much more nervous. However, it is great that we had five Americans in the last round. It has been a long time since that happened!”
“Personally, I am 80% happy with the results from Hinzenbach,” said Travel Coach Vasja Bajc. “Some members of the team are having a tough time which is influencing the results. It was really satisfying for me that Abby [Hughes] was back and took World Cup points twice. Also, Tara [Geraghty-Moats] is making small steps forward, and considering she was four years out of jumping, it is good. Nina [Lussi] has a strong desire, which may be overwhelming her and causing her mistakes. I am happy for Sarah [Hendrickson] that she is gaining confidence, although small mistakes are hurting her chances for a better placement. Jessica [Jerome] is struggling with some illness this week. Nita [Englund]! Her jumping is great, but we need to work on her landing. It is frustrating because she deserves to be on the podium!”
Women’s Ski Jumping USA will be cheering on U.S. Visa Women’s Ski Jumping Team members Emilee Anderson and Logan Sankey as they compete in the World Junior Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan this coming week. The World Cup team will next compete in Rasnov, Romania on February 7 and 8, 2015.
