Hendrickson honored with history-maker award
/SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Reigning World Champion ski jumper Sarah Hendrickson and Olympic gold medalist alpine skier Ted Ligety were honored Wednesday night as part of the annual Ski Affair and fundraiser hosted by the J. Willard Marriott Library at the University of Utah.
Hendrickson and Ligety received the History-Maker Award given to individuals who have made an outstanding impact on the sport. The event took place at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City, UT.
"It was huge honor to be welcomed into the Ski Archives community and I'm thankful to be recognized for my accomplishments," Hendrickson said. "Receiving an award like this next to Ted is especially huge for me because I have looked up to him so much as he is a stellar athlete and Park City native."
Also honored was Ted Johnson, the founder of Snowbird ski resort, who was given the S.J. Quinney Award, highlighting his contributions to the ski industry in the Intermountain region.
"These are two people (Ted and Sarah) who are truly outstanding athletes and are setting huge achievement levels and are from our region," said Greg Thompson, co-founder of the ski archives and associate dean for special collections at the Willard Library. "We decided to honor the two of them this year because of the success both had over the course of the last ski season."
The funds raised at the Ski Affair directly benefit the Ski Archives and help the library maintain its collections of ski history. In 2011, Women's Ski Jumping USA was honored during the Ski Affair event for "its persistence in pushing for women ski jumpers to be included in the Olympic Winter Games."
